Each year, Pantone announces the shade it believes will be the new trend for the upcoming year. Now that the end of 2021 is near, the color matching system is offering up its new shade.
The Pantone color of the year for 2022 is Very Peri, a periwinkle hue that pulls from multiple shades of blue mixed with red undertone. In a press release, Pantone describes the color as a blend of soothing blue hues combined with pops of red’s “energy and excitement” that comes together to create a warm, happy hue.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director for the Pantone Color Institute, said the shade is representative of the unprecedented change the world has seen but balances that sense of change with the “trusted and beloved blue color family.”
“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression,” said Eiseman.

Very Peri is also different from any of Pantone’s previous picks. Typically, the color authority dips back into its archives to choose a color. For 2022, though, Pantone developed the periwinkle shade on its own.
“Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.”

If you wanted to work more color into your home in the upcoming year or were looking to be bolder with your style, Very Peri might be the way to do it.
