A nice kale caesar salad makes a perfect side dish. Then, you remember that you have to find a way to tenderize your kale before making one. The good news, though, is there’s a hack for that.

All you need to tenderize your kale is some hot water and a salad spinner.

Typically, when you plan to soften kale, you’ll grab some olive oil and salt, add it to the kale, and massage the produce until it’s tender. Let’s be honest. That’s a lot of work. Now, you can get around it. According to America’s Test Kitchen, a hot water bath is the secret to easy, tender kale.

First, you’ll chop the kale to the size you’d like. Then, place the kale into a bowl and cover it all with hot water. Let it soak for 10 minutes. Once time has elapsed, remove the kale from the water (don’t strain it as the dirt in the water will reincorporate into the kale) and place it in a salad spinner. Spin the kale until there’s no excess water, and you’re good to go with perfectly tender kale.

Now that your kale is tender, these delicious salad options should definitely go on your menu. Looking to store your kale for later use? Check out these tips on helping your produce last longer in the fridge.
