This Is 2022’s Plant of the Year According to 1-800-Flowers

If you became a plant parent during the past two years like so many others, you might be looking to add to your collection in 2022. There’s one plant, in particular, you’ll want to pick up.

According to 1-800-Flowers, the baby rubber plant is slated to be a major trend in the new year and the ‘it’ plant to have.

The floral retailer explained that the Baby Rubber Plant (also known as peperomia) was chosen because it’s an optimistic plant.

“The symbolism behind the Baby Rubber Plant is really about good fortune, good luck, and happiness,” said Alfred Palomares, vice president of merchandising at 1-800-Flowers.com. “All those qualities tie back to the idea of 2022 being about joy and happiness.”

The plant features bold green shiny leaves shaped like teardrops and deep brown stems. When you think of the perfect plant for an office desk or coffee table, this is it. Plus, care is a breeze, so even those who didn’t become plant parents during the pandemic can successfully own one.

All the Baby Rubber Plant needs is to be watered when the soil becomes dry which typically happens once a week in the summer but can be left alone for up to two weeks in the winter. As for light, it prefers indirect sunlight and a temperature between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.

“It’s something unique and different in terms of the look and feel,” said Palomares. “It’s interesting, it’s distinctive, and it’s really easy to care for. All of those things that this plant stands for tie back to the sentiment for 2022.”
