Whether you’re a renter planning to do a few repairs before moving out or you’re a homeowner who knicked a bit of paint off the wall, getting a perfectly matched color can be tricky. Thankfully, there’s a TikTok hack for that.
TikTok content creator Cara Newhart explained in a handy video that your electrical outlets are the secret to the perfect paint color.
That probably doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but once you hear Newhart’s hack it will. In her video, she explained that your outlet’s cover obscures a bit of the wall. When you remove it, simply cut a small square of paint away from one of the corners—just be sure not to cut beyond the borders of your cover. Now, you’ve got a paint chip that can be taken into a paint supply or home improvement store and digitally matched.

Newhart’s hack isn’t just useful for small touch-ups, though. If you’ve previously had wallpaper or an accent wall and want to repaint an entire wall, you’ll certainly need the same shade. For bigger jobs like this, there’s yet another hack you can employ.
Ann Chen, a muralist, said to wrap your paintbrushes and rollers in aluminum foil after use. Doing so keeps air from getting to them and drying them out. Then, when you want to pick up your project the next day, all you need to do is unwrap them, and you’re ready to paint.
The next time you’re worried about snagging the perfect paint color, Newhart’s hack is a must-try.
