During the lockdowns of 2020, many turned to gardening, and in 2021, that trend didn’t slow down. Instead, trends emerged.
The most popular gardening activity among those trends? Growing your own food.
Breck’s, a gardening supply company, looked at Google Trends search volume for 38 popular gardening activities and trends as mentioned in popular magazines like Martha Stewart, Country Living, and the Farmer’s Almanac, over the course of the past year. The results revealed that people are very into growing their own food with 10 states dubbing it the top trend, and they were particularly popular in Western and Northeastern states.
As for why food gardens seem to grow in popularity, Breck’s posited that supply chain issues and the rising cost of groceries could play into people’s desire to have their own supply of veggies, herbs, and fruits on hand. Food gardens, however, have always been popular options in the gardening space, and as people looked for new at-home hobbies, its existing popularity could have helped propel it further into the lead when it comes to trends.
As for other trends, hanging gardens, balcony gardens, and indoor gardens all had solid showings that could indicate more renters and those with small spaces moving into the hobby. Fence gardens with twining plants and tropical plants were also common finds among the states.
How does your garden stack up? Are you one of the many who love growing their own food or do you prefer floral hanging gardens? You can find all of the results here.
