Your shower’s water pressure is low, and there’s a way to fix it. Sounds great, right? Well, it’s actually not if you’re looking to a popular TikTok hack to solve the problem.
According to plumbers, there’s a viral hack circling online that purports to increase your water pressure, but according to the experts, it could be a major mistake.

The hack comes from content creator @damgoodbuildr who was asked how to increase water pressure. To do so, they unscrew the showerhead and show a plastic flow restrictor inside the head. They insert a screw into one of the four plastic quadrants and drill until it goes into the plastic. Wiggle, pull the screw, and the flow restrictor should come out.
As you might have guessed, though, there’s a reason why your showerhead has a flow restrictor.

Experts surveyed by Toolstation gave this TikTok hack a thumbs down with 65% of the professional respondents saying it’s a bad idea. Why? One plumber explained that removing it can cause temperature issues, and the hack can result in wasted water and higher utility bills. That’s because the flow restrictor controls the flow of water, not the water pressure. You’ll get more water but not more pressure.
If you really want to up your shower pressure, invest in a high-pressure showerhead. Don’t turn to TikTok.
