A dishwasher is a miracle appliance. It can take almost all of the work out of dinner cleanup, but unfortunately, not everything can be popped into the appliance.
Can baking sheets go in the dishwasher?
Unfortunately, this oft-used bit of bakeware and cookware is best left out of the dishwasher. While some varieties are labeled as dishwasher safe, you might want to continue avoiding placing them in your appliance.
Your dishwasher is actually quite a harsh environment. Powerful water pressure, sometimes harsh detergents, and high heat settings can all add up to damage. Baking sheets are among the things that can get harmed during the wash. The detergents, in particular, can damage nonstick and natural finishes and over time affect their baking quality.
While it might be a pain, you should probably be hand cleaning your baking sheets, but the process doesn’t have to be labor-intensive. You’ll first need to let the pan cool so that cold water doesn’t warp the hot sheet. Then, use mild dish soap, warm water, and a gentle scrubber to clean.
If there’s baked-on food, try soaking the pan in warm water. If that doesn’t work, soaking the sheet in baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is a simple way to remove the debris.
If you’ve been popping your baking sheets in the oven, you might want to try handwashing going forward. Don’t worry, though, there’s still plenty that you can put in the dishwasher.
