How To Pick The Right Lipstick Shade For Your Skin Tone

When choosing the perfect lipstick shade for your skin tone, it’s important to consider your skin’s undertone and hair color. According to Blair, even if you don’t wear any other makeup, your hair color and even the colors within your outfit can affect how a color reads on the skin.

“If your skin is warmer—think in terms of pinky, peachy, and red tones—try finding shades that have a pinky-peachy undertone,” Blair said. “That will give a more natural look.”

Conversely, per Blair, if your skin tones have more golden or olive undertones, look for shades that are cool-toned.

Another of Blair’s tips? Testing on your finger—not your lips.

“I find that trying and testing a color on the fingertip gives a better indication of how it will read on the lips than by testing the color on the back of your hand,” Blair said. “This is because the lips often have more pigmentation than your hand.”

In terms of fall lipstick colors, Blair is on the dark-lip train, advising those who like to follow seasonal trends to opt for a bolder lip.

“Fall is always a time where I find it fun to break out those deeper-toned lippies,” Blair explained. “Right now, even black for lips is trending.”
