If you’re a dog owner, you’ve likely noticed that they can pick up weird items in their mouths. Whether you have a puppy or an older dog, it’s a strange habit. So, what’s up with them eating rocks?
Your dog might be snacking on rocks as a sign of boredom.
Some dogs are smarter than a two-year-old and can become easily bored with their routine. They might be eating rocks or chewing on sticks because there’s simply nothing else for them to do. They might also be trying to get your attention if they want to play.
One thing’s for sure: this is a dangerous habit that could injure your canine teeth, mouth, or digestive tract. To help them break the habit, increase your pup’s exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. Set aside designated time for play and encourage them to use puzzle games or snuffle mats for some indoor fun.
Training is another game that can stimulate them. Use high-reward treats to teach them “leave it” or “drop it” to end this risky behavior.
If you find your pup is still obsessively munching on rocks, this could also be one of the signs of pica, a condition where dogs crave and eat non-food items. In this case, partner with your vet to find treatment for your dog.
If you spend a lot of time outside with your pup, find ways to keep them entertained and give them enough baths for a healthy and happy life.
