What’s the Difference Between Jasmine Rice and Basmati Rice?

Rice is an excellent and versatile staple to have in the kitchen. But who knew there were so many different kinds of rice? So are jasmine rice and basmati rice exactly the same?

Although jasmine and basmati rice look similar, their textures and tastes are very different.

Jasmine rice is a long-grain rice from Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam. It comes in several colors, like red, white, brown, and black, but white is the most popular. Once cooked, jasmine rice has a softer, starchier texture with a more floral taste.

Basmati rice is also a long-grain rice grown in Pakistan, India, and the Himalayas. This rice comes in brown or white colors. It has a much nuttier taste than jasmine rice and has a more firm, slightly drier texture.

Although jasmine and basmati rice can be used for any delicious meal, pairing them with specific dishes can certainly make a difference. Jasmine rice is usually served with Thai food, such as soups or stir-fries. Since basmati rice is a drier grain, it can soak up flavorful sauces, so it’s excellent when paired with Indian curries.

When dry, jasmine rice and basmati rice look almost identical. But once cooked, they look and taste completely different.
