What Is Eating for Color?

When you hear the phrase “taste the rainbow”, you probably think of Skittles. But, when it comes to eating for color, that actually has nothing to do with candy. So what is it?

Eating for color is a simple trick you can use to add more produce to your plate and hopefully increase your fruit and vegetable intake.

While not all fruits and vegetables are vibrant, working to include a few “pops” of color into every meal can make a big difference in how you feel. It’s an easy habit to get into, and you’ll enjoy the benefits of vitamins, minerals, and other phytonutrients by trying different vegetables each day.

Research has shown that eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables can decrease the risk of mortality in adults. It can also reduce your risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Plus, with all of the incredible phytonutrients you’ll take in from colorful fruits and seasonal vegetables, you might experience more energy, better focus, and an improved mood.

It’s easier to put more colorful vegetables on your plate than you might think. Don’t be afraid to have fun with your produce, starting at the grocery store. Use it as an excuse to try completely new foods, or to put together a recipe with a purple or red veggie as the main attraction. Add dark leafy greens to your favorite sandwiches. Have you ever juiced a cantaloupe? The possibilities are endless.

Eating for color isn’t a “cure-all” and it’s certainly not the only way to improve your health. But, it’s an easy way to remember to eat a colorful, healthy diet.
