Can Eating Garlic Help Your Allergies?

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you know all too well the miserable symptoms that can accompany them. Itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion are all part of normal life for allergy sufferers.

While there are many over-the-counter remedies available, some people claim that a natural solution could be found in a simple pantry staple: garlic.

Keep in mind that the scientific evidence for this is not conclusive, but there is some research suggesting that consuming garlic could help alleviate allergy symptoms. While eating more garlic may not work for everyone, this natural remedy has shown some signs of improving allergy symptoms.

The theory is that garlic contains a compound called diallyl disulfide. This compound has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the severity of allergic reactions.

Garlic also contains quercetin, which can inhibit the body’s release of histamines. Since histamines are what help your body get rid of things that are bothering you—causing a lot of allergy symptoms—preventing this release can do a lot to ease allergy symptoms.

If you’re looking for a natural remedy, garlic may be the answer. Keep in mind, however, that while garlic may provide relief for allergy symptoms in some cases, it should not be used as a substitute for prescribed medications.
