Let’s face it, we could probably all benefit from a generous glass of water. Maintaining adequate hydration can be a serious struggle, especially when we get busy or distracted by beverages other than water. Adding Celtic sea salt to your water is a new trend that supposedly helps hydration.

If you’re hoping that Celtic sea salt is a magical hydrating elixir…unfortunately, it may not be as miraculous as the trends claim.

One of the primary reasons people believe Celtic sea salt can enhance hydration is its magnesium content. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in numerous bodily functions, including hydration regulation.

While Celtic sea salt does contain traces of magnesium, it’s crucial to note that the amount obtained from the salt is relatively minimal compared to other dietary sources…like your normal food. Relying solely on Celtic sea salt in water as a magnesium source may not provide significant benefits in terms of hydration.

The truth is that Celtic sea salt is not all that different from regular table salt in terms of nutrients. Adding it to your water in the hopes of boosting your magnesium levels (and helping your body hydrate better) isn’t as effective as other methods.

Consuming excessive amounts of salt, including Celtic sea salt, can lead to sodium imbalances and potential health risks. Typically, it’s recommended to limit your daily intake of salt to avoid health complications associated with high sodium levels. This includes limiting your Celtic sea salt.

But that doesn’t mean you should limit your water intake. Proper hydration is vital for overall well-being and optimal bodily functions. Water is the best source of hydration, and consuming an adequate amount throughout the day is crucial for maintaining proper bodily fluid balance.

Magnesium supplementation can be a simple way to boost your magnesium levels.

If you’re hoping to enhance the taste of your water to help yourself drink more water, then adding Celtic sea salt is acceptable as long as you do so in moderation.

A better way to increase your magnesium levels is to focus on a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods.

Incorporating foods that naturally contain minerals like magnesium—such as seeds, nuts, and whole grains—can provide a more substantial and well-rounded source of essential nutrients.

So, while Celtic sea salt may have its merits as a flavorful addition to dishes, it’s important to approach the notion of it being a hydrating agent with caution. Relying solely on Celtic sea salt for hydration won’t be as effective as maintaining a well-balanced diet and consuming adequate amounts of water.
