No one wants to see flies buzzing around their house. They don’t really have any benefits, they’re kind of gross, and that incessant “buzz” is downright annoying. Plus, the last thing you want is for them to land on your food! While swatting them is one way to get rid of flies one by one, prevention is better. Thankfully, you can use natural ingredients to repel flies and make your home smell great.

You don’t have to give in to harmful chemicals or even spend a lot of money to keep flies at bay.

Let’s cover a couple of solutions that can naturally repel flies and give your home a fresh, clean scent at the same time.

First, it’s important to note that the best way to keep flies out of your home is to keep it as clean as possible. Flies are attracted to things like open garbage cans, leaky drains, or even rotting food (like onions or potatoes). By making sure your house is clean—especially the kitchen—you’re less likely to see these dirty pests buzzing around.

But, if you’ve been prone to flies in the past, even with a clean home, you can prevent them using a few natural ingredients.

You might’ve already guessed that flies are attracted to certain scents. That’s what brings them into your home, to begin with. Alternatively, some scents can deter them.

Handcraft Eucalyptus Essential Oil - 100% Pure & Natural

The strong scent of eucalyptus can keep flies at bay.

For example, by using essential oils like eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint, you can keep flies at bay and your house will smell amazing. Make a homemade fly spray by mixing a few drops of an essential oil in water and spraying it in areas of your home where you’ve seen flies in the past. You can also spray it around all entrances—including windows.

You can also use all-natural ingredients like citrus to deter flies. Many people use things like citronella candles to repel mosquitos, but flies don’t like the smell of citrus, either. You can purchase candles when you’re trying to enjoy a meal outside or playing with the kids. But, if you want to keep flies out of the house, create a strong citrus scent with orange peels. Place them on a plate in your kitchen or near the windows.

Murphy's Naturals Mosquito Repellent Candle

Citronella candles are great for mosquitos and flies!

Because flies also don’t like the strong menthol scent of mint, laying a few mint leaves by your window will cause them to look elsewhere for a place to land.

As you can see, strong scents are the way to go. Flies might not like these smells, but most people love them. So, give a few of these natural remedies a try to keep disgusting flies out of your home, and to keep things smelling fresh.
