Here’s How to Ripen an Avocado Quickly

Avocados are a tricky fruit. Finding the perfect one in the bin at the grocery can be a feat. Good news, there’s an avocado ripening hack that requires practically no effort.

For those who need to make emergency guacamole or want to create the perfect avocado toast, there’s a way to get the fickle fruit to ripen to the perfect point without purchasing one that may just go bad before you use it. The surprising part is that you use other fruits to do it. Tomatoes, apples, melons, and ripe bananas let off a gas called ethylene. This gas speeds up the ripening process of other foods in close proximity—like avocados.

All you need to do for this hack is take your fruits that emit the gas and sandwich them around the avocado you’d like to ripen. Leave them together for a day or so, and boom! You now have a perfect avocado.

The next time you need that slightly mushy avocado for guac, you don’t need to grab a lime, you need to grab an apple.
