Spend Your Lunch Break with This Endearing Tour of Finland’s Sauna Culture

A small sauna in the Finnish countryside.
Great Big Story/YouTube

To say Finnish people love saunas would be a profound understatement. In a country of roughly 5.5 million people, there are an estimated 2 million saunas. This video offers an adorable short tour of that love.

For most people, a sauna is something you might enjoy at the gym now and then, or maybe while on vacation. The idea that, elsewhere, everyone and their brother (literally) has a sauna (or three) might be surprising. However, it’s been deeply enmeshed in the cultures of Northern Europe stretching back to the 12th century.

In the video below, Great Big Story—a company that tells stories in a short but cinematic fashion—tackles the Finnish sauna culture in just 3.5 minutes.

We took away two big things from this video. The first is that, naturally, we really wish we had a sauna right outside our back door. The second is the only thing we need in our life more than a toasty sauna is Mathias Spolander to break the world around us into digestible bites of sauna-based wisdom.
