A Woman Faked Built-Ins with an Ikea Billy Bookcase

A set of white bookshelves are propped up against a wall and an after image show those bookshelves painted, attached to a wall, and filled with books.

Not all of us are blessed enough to live in a home with built-in bookshelves. There’s good news, though. A TikTok user found a hack to fake built-ins, and it looks so good.

TikTok user Karissa Baker who runs the account @rivercityhome documents the renovations on her fixer-upper via the video-sharing platform. In one of her latest uploads, Baker illustrates how she’s able to fake built-ins using the iconic Billy Bookcase from IKEA.

First, Baker and her husband built the bookshelves and extenders and placed them in the corner where they wanted them to stay. Next, the pair installed classic, brass library lighting at the tops of the shelves routing the wiring behind them in order to conceal it. Finally, using wooden boards, they created a trim at the top and bottom that made the shelves — which didn’t quite reach the ceiling — look built into the home. As a final touch, they filled in the holes along the sides of the bookcase which allow owners to adjust shelf height and painted them to match the walls.

The end result is a bookcase you’d never imagine was made with $50 IKEA bookcases.
