Wine glasses are likely one of the more delicate pieces of drinkware in your collection. The fragile stem and glass construction mean you need to be extra careful when it comes to caring for them, but it turns out, there’s a wine glass cleaning hack that’s so easy it may surprise you.

Given their fragility, you might think that the best way to wash wine glasses is by hand, but surprise! That’s not necessarily the case. Those of us who hate washing dishes in the sink (hi, that’s me!) may be in luck. According to Maximilian Riedel, 11th generation CEO and president of glassware company Riedel says when it comes to getting your glasses the cleanest, the dishwasher actually does the best job.

He spoke with Apartment Therapy and explained that dishwashers help eliminate some of the risks of breakage caused by mishandling. But if you’re going to use the dishwasher, there are still things to keep in mind. First, he recommends washing your glasses alone without any other dishes or silverware. If that’s not possible, though, he says to make sure they aren’t touch anything else. You should also place them on the top rack and use glass holders if your dishwasher has them. Finally, use a dishwasher setting that’s safe for glassware and finish the wash cycle off with the air-dry setting.
