Arguably, Popeyes was the chain that kicked off the now-infamous fast-food chicken wars last year with its beloved new sandwich. Now, the Louisiana Kitchen might be starting yet another conflict because Popeyes’ new fish sandwich has hit locations nationwide.
Primarily known for its chicken, Popeyes is branching out with the Cajun Flounder Sandwich. The new menu item features a buttery brioche bun, filled with pickles, tartar sauce, and a fried, Cajun-seasoned piece of flounder. The sandwich launched nationwide on Feb. 11, so you can pick it up now at your local Popeyes for $4.49.
According to Sami Siddiqui, president of the Americas at Popeyes, the success of the chain’s new chicken sandwich last year inspired the company to add yet another new menu item.
“After seeing the response to our Chicken Sandwich in 2019, we are excited to deliver yet another delicious sandwich to our fans that is sure to reset industry standards,” Siddiqui said in a press release. “At Popeyes, we don’t take shortcuts on quality and strive to ensure our ingredients are the best of the best. That’s why we’re proud to be serving up the most authentic Cajun Flounder Sandwich in quick-service restaurants.”
It’s easy to see how this could start yet another fast-food chain war. After all, McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish is one of its most popular sandwiches, and Long John Silvers and Captain D’s both specialize in fast-seafood.
Only time will tell, but watch this space; it’s most likely about to be filled with a school of new fish sandwiches.
