Welcome to 2021, where it’s raining chicken sandwiches. Hot on the heels of McDonald’s new version of its fried chicken sandwich, Burger King will soon debut an updated version of its own.

According to a press release, BK’s new sandwich is distinguishing itself from its fast-food poultry competitors by not being “burger joint quality” chicken. That’s quite a promise given the stiff competition.

But the home of the Whopper has crafted a menu item that features fresh, hand-breaded chicken breast that you can get in regular or spicy. It comes on a toasted potato bun, with deli pickles and a special sauce. You can also add lettuce and tomato if you prefer.

There’s a slight catch with the brand’s new chicken sandwich, though: As of this writing, there’s no exact launch date. In the press release, the chain explained it’s been developing the new item since 2019 and has been testing it in select markets since September.

However, the company makes it very clear that good things come to those who wait, and it won’t deliver anything less than perfection.

“What if hand-breading were to chicken what flame-grilling is to burgers?” said Ellie Doty, chief marketing officer of Burger King North America. “That’s been our guiding filter to bring a delicious chicken sandwich to guests in a way only BK can. We’ll take the time to get it right and our guests will definitely taste the difference.”

Until that fateful day, don’t worry—there’s plenty of chicken to go around. With KFC, Popeye’s, McDonald’s, and Chick-Fil-A all offering new tasty sandwiches, you’ve got plenty of options.
