When you imagine an engagement ring, there’s a good chance a diamond figures prominently in the setting. However, according to a new survey, diamonds aren’t a girl’s best friend in 2021. It appears the classic stone is out in favor of more untraditional styles this year.

Inspired by The Knot’s 2020 Jewelry and Engagement Study, Apartment Therapy spoke with Swasti Sarna, insights manager at Pinterest, and Dayna Isom Johnson, trend expert at Etsy. The outlet wanted to find out what was trending among online shoppers when it came to rings.

Isom Johnson noticed an increase in gemstones for engagement rings, with searches for those alternative styles rising 65%. Over on Pinterest, “creative engagement rings” remains one of the top search terms, and gems like sapphires are particularly popular. The different stones work for gender-neutral rings, as well.

What caused this trend, though? According to Isom Johnson, one major influence remains the same from year to year.

“Pop culture has always been a huge source of inspiration for shoppers, especially when it comes to wedding and engagement rings,” Isom Johnson said. “Thanks to the release of many popular royal-inspired shows, colorful gems—which were popular in the 1800s—are trending again.”

If you’re curious, you can check all the other trends Sarna and Isom Johnson predicted for this year. Trying to choose a ring and feeling a bit lost? These tips can help you pick the perfect option for your partner.
