A set of black matte West Elm vases have topped the brand’s best-seller list, but if $140 is a bit too steep for you, we’ve got some good news. You can DIY your own version for under $15.

TikTok content creator, @thedioxxalela, posted a step-by-step tutorial for a DIY version of the West Elm vases, and apparently, people are really interested. The video has garnered over 1.5 million likes! So, just how do you create these chic vases yourself? Well, a dollar store is key.

In the video, @thedioxxalela first heads to the Dollar Tree to pick up three vases similar in shape to the West Elm versions and some baking powder (not soda). Then, it’s off to Michael’s, where she purchases black paint and small and large paintbrushes.

Back at home, she mixes the baking powder into the paint until it was frothy and a bit grainy. Next, it’s time to paint the vases. The trick is to paint horizontally around the vase in thin layers, then add a coat inside to make the vase completely opaque.

Let it dry, and hello, black matte vases.
