You know those mornings when, despite having slept pretty well, you still feel exhausted? According to one TikTok doc, it might be because you’re not using the 90-minute sleep cycle.

Dr. Karan Raj, NHS surgeon, has over 3.4 million followers on TikTok, where he shares fun medical facts, like the number of people born with outies and how many folks dream in black and white.

He also offers practical advice, though, including his most recent viral post (see below) on how to wake up feeling more refreshed.

According to Dr. Raj, during sleep, we cycle through four major stages: light, deep, and dream sleep,  then back to light. Each of these lasts roughly 90 minutes.

In the video, he explains if you plan to wake up at the end of one of these cycles, you’ll arise feeling more rested. This is because at the end of each cycle, our body is closest to its waking state, so you won’t being ripping it out of a deep sleep.

To increase the likelihood of waking at the end of one of these stages, Dr. Raj suggests choosing the time you’d like to wake up. Then, move backward in 90-minute increments until you get a time closest to when you’d like to fall asleep.

If you want to improve your sleep even more, check out these clever tips.
