There are certain foods people are passionate about and willing to go to bat for, like pineapple pizza. Another dish people have strong opinions about is barbecue. Now, you can see how your favorite style ranks in your state, and the rest of the country.
BBQ Revolution looked at search data and Google Trends to determine which barbecue styles were the most popular in each state. The site discovered that the five most popular were:
- Texas
- Kansas City
- Memphis
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
Each of the five features different cooking styles and core ingredients, like slow-roasting versus grilling, and vinegar versus tomato bases.
What tops the list overall? It’s likely your state is a fan of Texas barbecue. In total, 33 states prefer this slow and low-smoked meat with a light tomato-based sauce. The runner-up was Kansas City, with its sweeter tomato, molasses, and brown sugar sauce.

As for the least popular, South Carolina’s mustard-based sauce (which you might have heard referred to as “Carolina Gold”) is only the most popular in its home state.
