There’s no shortage of TikTok cleaning hacks, but, of course, not all of them work. So, how about the latest showing folks using laundry detergent on their floors?

When it comes to mopping with laundry detergent, #moptok pretty much insists on using powdered Tide mixed with hot water (and sometimes, dish detergent). So, technically, this hack doesn’t involve pouring Gain all over your hardwoods.

Melissa Maker, cleaning expert and creator of Clean My Space, told PureWow this hack is actually legit! She said detergents like Tide are excellent for deep cleaning your floors, especially if it’s been some time since you’ve done so.

However, there are some caveats, too. If you have hardwoods or natural stone floors, Maker advises that you stick with whatever the manufacturer recommends, rather than experimenting with something new.

Maker also warned that some TikTok concoctions could even be dangerous.

“One of the things that I’ve seen over and over and over again in many forms on TikTok is the overuse of products and mixing products that aren’t necessarily safe to be mixed together,” Maker said. “I always believe that less is more, and I would prefer to use less stuff, and basic stuff to get the best results in the least amount of time.”

If you want to use this hack, it probably won’t hurt if you have the right kind of floors. However, if you have hardwoods, you might wanna stick with a more tried-and-true cleaning method.
