If your lawn is looking a little dull, aeration might be the missing piece in your maintenance routine. There’s a cheap and easy way to incorporate it.

Matthew Blashaw, lawn care expert and host of HGTV’s Professional Grade, says aerating your lawn is one of the best things you can do if you want the greenest grass possible. And he recommends getting a pair of spiked aerating shoes to do it.

You just strap the spiked soles on to any pair of shoes, and, as you walk, they create holes in your lawn. Blashaw explains that these holes allow water, nutrients, sunlight, and air to penetrate deeper into the ground and nourish your grass. He recommends wearing the shoes as you mow your lawn.

Not only are aerating shoes an easy way to get the job done, but they’re also affordable. You can purchase a pair on Amazon for under $25. You’ll want to be sure they’re strapped securely to your shoes and avoid any rocky areas to prevent tripping.

If this method isn’t for you, you can also rent an aerator from home improvement stores, like Home Depot and Lowe’s. Or, you can buy one, if you prefer—there are simple manual options in addition to machines you tow behind your mower.

So, if you’re ready to aerate your lawn, you’ve got lots of options.
