Get Great Bakes With Silicone Baking Cups

Reuseable silicone baking cups will level up your baking because they distribute heat evenly and cool quickly, separate from food without pulling out chunks, and clean easily by hand or in the dishwasher. Try our recommended silicone baking cups for great bakes and a more sustainable kitchen!

Silicone is not plastic; it’s a flexible, water-resistant synthetic rubber made from quartz sand, also called silica sand. To make silicone, quartz sand is heated to extremely high temperatures to separate the element silicon, which is then used to create various siloxanes. Siloxanes are then polymerized, and the final products are a family of silicone materials. Low- and high-temperature-resistant polysiloxane, also called rubber silicone, is the material most often used to fabricate kitchen tools.

Food-grade silicone has been approved as safe by FDA and the European LFGD standards, and studies of silicones by Health Canada, Australia Departments of Environment and Health, UK regulatory bodies, and the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety have found that these materials pose no risk to human health when used as intended.

The combination of flexibility and temperature resistance makes silicone the perfect material for baking cups that you can use again and again.

Choosing a Baking Cup

There are a few things to look for when choosing a silicone baking cup:

  • Size: Baking cups are typically classified into mini, standard, and jumbo sizes. The actual measurements of the baking cup may vary slightly, but typically, a mini cup measures 1.5 inches across the bottom and 1 inch on the side, the standard size is 2 inches at the base and 1.25 inches high, and the jumbo size is 2.25 inches at the base and 2 inches high.
  • Material: While the cups may be made of silicone, sometimes the silicone has other materials included. For example, silicone is a colorless material, so products with colors have pigment added. If plastic fillers are included, it’s important that the cups be free of BPA, BPS, and phthalates associated with plastic because these chemicals have known adverse effects on human health. An FDA and/or LFGD certification indicates the products are safe to use.
Note: You may see articles or reviews that say a product is harmful if you pinch or twist it and the material turns white, but this idea does not come from the FDA. According to the FDA, the regulation for silicone specifies what fillers are allowed to be added for a specific use, and finished products must meet FDA standards.
  • Heat Resistance: Silicone is generally heat resistant to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, but some manufacturers may have lower temperature recommendations, so be sure to check.
Note: Never use silicone baking cups with direct heat like a broiler or an open flame.

You may need only one of our recommendations for your baking, but they have so many uses, you may want them all!
